Parmer County court cancels Juneteenth as a county holiday, shifts observances for 2026

The court voted to cancel Juneteenth as a county employee holiday and reallocate half of that day's observance to the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, making that Wednesday a full paid holiday. Judge Carrasco said the adjustments were proposed as part of the overall 2026 schedule; Commissioner Charles Wilkins had suggested cancelling Juneteenth during discussion. Commissioner Wilkins seconded the motion and the measure passed by a majority vote.
The court also agreed to change the county's observed Independence Day from Saturday, July 4, to Friday, July 3. The motion to adopt the full amended schedule was made by Judge Carrasco and seconded by Commissioner Wilkins; the court approved the plan by majority vote.
The changes affect county employee holiday observances for 2026; no departmental exemptions or implementation details were discussed on the record.
