The board recognized winter guard, Steppas, AVID program outcomes and GEAR UP cohort supports, highlighting multiple regional and state athletic honors and programs that boost college readiness and scholarships.
HARRISONBURG, Va. — At its April 7 meeting the Harrisonburg City School Board recognized a string of student accomplishments across athletics, fine arts and college‑preparation programs.
The Steppas and winter guard were singled out for top finishes at competitions in Richmond and North Carolina. Principals from Skyline and Thomas Harrison highlighted teams and individuals who earned All‑Region and state honors; Harrisonburg High School reported several All‑State athletes, including Brooke Saunders, state champion in the indoor 3,200‑meter run.
District AVID leaders (Kirk Moyers and Hannah Bumnaraski) reported that AVID enrollment spans grades 6–12, that seniors have earned significant scholarship awards and that many AVID alumni have returned to work in the division. GEAR UP coordinators noted the federal cohort grant provides about $45,000 per school for college readiness programming in the participating cohort and a $2,500 scholarship for eligible graduates in the GEAR UP cohort.
Board members applauded students, coaches and staff and urged the community to attend spring sports and arts events.
