Mono County proclaims January 2026 Human Trafficking Awareness Month

The Mono County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a proclamation designating January 2026 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month.
Sheriff Ron Braun read the proclamation and described human trafficking as a "borderless crime" that can occur in physical and online forms. He urged parents, teachers and community members to monitor behavior changes and to report suspicious activity, and pointed to local resources including Wild Iris and the Sheriff’s Office.
"A great deal of what happens is online with predators... coercing young people through social media," he said, adding that trafficking is not just a foreign problem: "There are people here in California, in the United States, that prey on children and we can help." The board adopted the proclamation by roll call, 5–0.
The proclamation urges local public and private agencies to assist victims and to raise awareness of trafficking risks in the county.
