Chattahoochee County commissioners tabled consideration of a public-safety radio upgrade after a demonstration by Southern Link and discussion about coverage, interoperability and cost.
Mr. Sullivan of Southern Link demonstrated two radio models to commissioners, the sheriff and the chief deputy. County Manager Thomas Weaver said surrounding counties predominantly use the county’s current system and that repeaters and antennas would still be required as backups. Commissioner Jason Frost said, "we should work with the sheriff and help him with the radios, but the biggest concern is where the money is going to come from," and urged staff to pursue grant opportunities and possible cooperation with neighboring counties such as Stewart.
The sheriff indicated a preference for a high-end radio package reportedly priced near $70,000, which prompted concern from commissioners about affordability for a small county. Weaver said he would seek quotes from Motorola as an alternate vendor and investigate public-safety grant sources.
By unanimous motion the commission tabled the purchase pending a revised quote and discussion at the next work session; staff were asked to return potential grant options and cost comparisons.
Why it matters: Radio upgrades can improve responder safety and interoperability but can also require substantial capital outlay and ongoing maintenance; commissioners prioritized exploring funding options before committing county funds.
