Superintendent (S2) recommended caps designed to preserve small class sizes and ensure adequate staffing. "I would recommend that grades kindergarten through third grade and then tenth grade through twelfth grade would be capped at 88," she said, adding that those figures translate to about four sections per grade and roughly 22 students per section. She proposed grades 4–6 be capped at 80, grades 7–8 at 88 (noting those grades are already over 88 and would effectively be closed to new transfers), and grade 9 at 70. District maximums recommended were 500 students in the elementary, 240 in the middle school and 320 in the high school.
The superintendent said the caps respond to constrained resources and the need to maintain program offerings: "We have to make sure that we are allocating our resources appropriately and that we can still have the class sizes and the opportunities to our students that we want to." Board members discussed the trade-offs and agreed the numbers struck an acceptable balance; Chair (S1) moved to approve the caps and the motion passed by voice vote.
The board also noted the caps can be revisited. The superintendent warned that reopening a capped grade later could be complicated if families have already been told transfer requests were denied. The district will notify affected families and implement the caps for the coming school year.
The motion to adopt the caps carried; no recorded roll-call tally was entered in the minutes.
