Cherokee County board accepts two commissioners' resignations, approves $183,615 payout and interim county attorney

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on March 11 accepted the resignations of Vice Chair Cal Stiles and Commissioner Dan Eichenbaum, declared the two seats vacant and approved a $183,615 budget revision to pay out the former county attorney’s contract.
Chairman Alan Bryant called the special meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. at the Cherokee County Courthouse and said the meeting’s purpose was to address the two resignations. Commissioner Mark Stiles moved to accept Cal Stiles’s resignation; Commissioner Ben Adams seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Commissioner Ben Adams then moved to accept Dan Eichenbaum’s resignation; Commissioner Mark Stiles seconded, and that motion also passed unanimously.
After accepting the resignations, the board voted to adopt resolutions declaring the seats of Cal Stiles and Dan Eichenbaum vacant. The motion to declare the vacancies was made by Commissioner Ben Adams, seconded by Commissioner Mark Stiles, and passed unanimously.
County Manager Randy Wiggins presented a representation agreement from Asheville law firm Teague Campbell to serve as interim county attorney and said the county also needed to pay out the former county attorney’s contract. Chairman Alan Bryant moved to approve a budget revision in the amount of $183,615 to cover that payout; Commissioner Mark Stiles seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
Following the budget approval, Bryant moved to enter into the Representation Agreement with Teague Campbell to represent Cherokee County as interim county attorney. Commissioner Mark Stiles seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
Chairman Bryant moved to adjourn; Commissioner Mark Stiles seconded and the meeting adjourned. At 9:15 a.m., Assistant County Manager and Clerk to the Board Maria Hass delivered the resolutions declaring the vacancies to Chuck Parris of the Republican Executive Committee.
The meeting record states these minutes were later approved at a regular meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on April 20, 2026.
