The Smyth County Board of Supervisors voted March 12 to accept the Opioid Abatement Authority’s settlement distribution and authorized county officials to execute related documents, though the county’s final share has not been provided.
County Attorney Scot Farthing informed the board the Opioid Abatement Authority is releasing a settlement distribution tied to a $97 million release across affected localities and recommended the board accept the distribution and authorize the County Administrator to sign documents on behalf of the county. Farthing said the board would not know Smyth County’s precise distribution amount until a later date.
"We will accept the distribution and authorize execution of documents," Royal Oak District Supervisor Courtney Widener moved; Rye Valley District Supervisor Jason Parris seconded and the motion passed unanimously with Chair Atkins absent.
The board took no further action on allocation at this meeting, and Farthing indicated staff would present details about the county’s specific share when available.
