Summary
At the April 18 organizational meeting, alder Terry Killian won the council presidency in a 6–5 vote after nominations from colleagues and brief statements by both candidates.
Terry Killian was elected president of the Wausau Common Council at the council’s April 18 organizational meeting following a 6–5 vote. Mayor Doug Denny opened nominations and alder Tierney nominated Killian; alder Lukens nominated Michael Martins. After each nominee spoke, ballots were distributed and counted by the clerk.
Killian told colleagues she accepted the nomination based on her view that “the council president has 2 responsibilities. The first responsibility is to be the chair of committees of the whole, and the second is to stand in when the mayor is unable to carry out certain of his responsibilities.” Michael Martins, also nominated, said he saw the president as an “anchor of the council” and emphasized collaboration between the executive and legislative branches.
The clerk announced the result after tabulation: “With a vote of 6 to 5, Terry Killian is the council president for the next term.” The council then moved on to the next agenda items.
The council’s organizational meeting also included swearing-in ceremonies and other routine organizational business.
