Geneva County approves bridge repair, buys dump truck and schedules equipment auction

The Geneva County Commission on Feb. 9 approved a set of public-works actions including a bridge replacement, an equipment purchase and plans to sell surplus trucks.
Engineer Justin Barfield reported the pipe and rock needed to replace the damaged bridge on Round About Road would cost about $40,000. Commissioner Jeff Hatcher moved to proceed with replacement and the commission voted 4-0 to authorize the work. Chairman Toby Seay indicated funds could come from the county’s one-cent road fund.
Barfield also recommended purchasing used equipment identified through ALDOT: a 2015 John Deere motor grader for $105,000 and a 2012 International dump truck for $25,000. Commissioners voted to buy the 2012 International dump truck for $25,000 with one-cent funds (motion by Commissioner Todd Brannon; vote 4-0). Barfield presented an agreement with JM Wood Auction for the March sale of two Kenworth dump trucks and one older International, and the commission approved the auction agreement 4-0.
Separately, the Town of Black requested the county Road & Bridge department install four-way stop signage at the intersection of South Main Street and County Road 4; the town will absorb costs and the commission adopted a resolution authorizing Road & Bridge to install the signs (vote recorded 3-0 while Commissioner Weston Spivey was out of the room). Barfield also updated commissioners on progress of other bridge projects (Caldwell Road complete; Line Road about 75% complete) and said State EMA is appealing a FEMA denial on a prior emergency funding extension.
No contract for the 2015 grader was finalized at the Feb. 9 meeting. The commission instructed staff to proceed with the approved bridge work and to manage necessary procurement and billing for the Black signage.
