Hartselle council OKs budget adjustment for cyber insurance; makes Cemetery Board appointments, schedules April meeting

The Hartselle City Council approved several administrative items at its Feb. 24 meeting, including a budget adjustment to cover a higher cyber insurance premium, three Cemetery Board appointments and a meeting date change.
City Clerk-Controller Rita S. Lee told the council that the city’s Travelers cyber insurance premium increased by $6,745 from the prior year. She noted the city paid a $18,500 premium in 2023 with a different carrier and paid $13,551 last year with Travelers, and said staff increased Insurance Expense line items to cover liability and cyber but did not anticipate the larger increase. Council Member Mike Swafford moved to approve the budget adjustment; Council Member Virginia Alexander seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The council also filled three Cemetery Board positions: Richard Richie was appointed to a five-year full term (motion by Mike Swafford, seconded by Sherry Yeager); Teresa Haynes was appointed to a two-year unexpired term (motion by Austin Baker, seconded by Mike Swafford); and Tim Mabrey was appointed to a one-year unexpired term (motion by Mike Swafford, seconded by Austin Baker). All appointments passed by unanimous voice votes.
Council Member Sherry Yeager moved to move the council’s second April meeting to Monday, April 27, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. because of the Alabama League of Municipalities convention; the motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Missy Evans used her remarks to remind businesses that business license renewals are due Feb. 28, announced the annual audit is almost complete, thanked Building Inspector Tommy Wimberly for coordinating an automatic door at the Senior Center, and said the Hartselle E-Center will open the second week of March at 407 Chestnut Street (she thanked Senator Orr and Representative Stadthagen for contributions). She also announced the State of the Schools address on Feb. 28, said Sports Facility Management would be in Hartselle this week to begin the Park Optimization Plan, congratulated Thomas Phillips on securing a $5,000 soccer grant and said volunteers are planning a July 4 event.
