Summary
Founders of a proposed Downtown Cultural and Arts District (DCAD) asked the City of Maple Valley for a long-term lease of a five-acre site and said they are pursuing grants; Council directed staff to work with stakeholders and scheduled a May 18 return and public hearing.
Dace Anderson and Mary Jane Glaser, representing a newly formed Downtown Cultural and Arts District (DCAD), presented a proposal for a five-acre "Legacy Site" that would include parking and cultural uses, asking the City of Maple Valley to consider a long-term lease and help secure grant funding.
The presenters said DCAD is a joint venture of the Maple Valley Creative Arts Council and Rock ’n’ More Music Academy and that they are applying for multiple grants, including a 4Culture grant, to advance site planning. They described the April 6 discussion as an initial introduction and said they expect to return with more detailed materials on May 18.
Mayor Sean P. Kelly asked staff to coordinate a public hearing and to engage the Parks and Recreation Commission and Arts Commission on possible uses. Council directed City Manager Laura Philpot to work with the applicants and other parties to prepare a proposal for the May 18 City Council meeting.
The presentation drew council questions about details and next steps; councilmembers did not take formal action on lease terms at the April 6 study session. The City will host additional public engagement and a council discussion at the May 18 meeting, where DCAD leaders said they will present more detailed plans and funding-status updates.
The meeting took place at Lake Wilderness Lodge in a hybrid format; the City noted Zoom information will follow for the April 13 regular business meeting where other agenda items will be considered.
