Leaders from the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta told the Conyers City Council about programs and local impact at the Barksdale Club and highlighted a recent half‑million dollar investment in Conyers facilities.
Libby Sailor Wright, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta, described the organization’s mission and regional footprint, noting 26 clubs across Metro Atlanta and that Barksdale is the easternmost club in the system. ‘‘Our whole vision is making sure that you see thousands and thousands of youth that are thriving in their community,’’ Sailor Wright said.
Local staff described the Barksdale Club’s scale and services: Terry Walker Moore said the site employs three full‑time staff and about 17 part‑time year‑round staff and serves roughly 500 children in Rockdale County, with an average daily attendance (ADA) of about 150 and a membership of approximately 325, including about 110 teens. Senior regional director Bobby Dunn detailed program outcomes, saying the club provided tutoring and character development to hundreds of youth and reported specific participation numbers for homework help, leadership and healthy‑lifestyle programs.
Dunn and local staff also announced that Major League Baseball and the national Boys & Girls Club office contributed resources for a new baseball diamond, which Dunn described as a ‘‘half million dollar investment’’ in Conyers that included fencing, lighting and renovated dugouts and will expand recreational opportunities for area youth.
Councilmembers thanked the presenters and noted the club’s role in workforce readiness and community partnerships. The presentation was offered during the council’s presentation segment, and council members later cited the club as an example of successful community‑partner programming when discussing youth engagement and upcoming city initiatives.
The club invited councilmembers and residents to support member recruitment and to consider partnerships that expand academic and workforce readiness programs.
