Katy council honors coach Mike Johnston with proclamation

The proclamation said Johnston served as head football coach and campus athletic coordinator at Katy High School from 1982 until his 2003 retirement, led the program to multiple district and state championship appearances, and was honored by Katy Independent School District in 2017 with Mike Johnston Field at Legacy Stadium. Mayor Theel invited family members and former players forward for photos following the proclamation.
Council members offered personal remembrances. Council member Paula Taylor said her son played for Johnston and called him “a good influence,” noting Johnston and his wife were important to her family. Council member Roy Robertson highlighted the community pride Johnston inspired and asked residents to remember the coach’s contributions to local high school athletics.
The council’s actions were ceremonial; no formal votes were required on the proclamation. The mayor asked those honored to come forward for photographs at the conclusion of the reading.
