Miss Salam, who started the festival decades ago, and a committee member described the event as a vehicle to promote cultural engagement, support local artists and small businesses, and increase youth participation. “We want this festival to be safe, inclusive, public gathering for all and to promote intergenerational cultural connection,” one presenter said.
Organizers told commissioners they had met with the city manager, downtown manager and the new visitors bureau director and said the county and board of education had been engaged. The presenters asked the commission to consider a three-year tiered support plan that would reduce city funding as vendor and sponsor revenue grows.
Commissioners asked practical questions about the date and budget implications. Staff confirmed the item is included in the proposed FY2027 budget and organizers said a rain date of Oct. 1 is planned. Commissioners also asked whether county or school board commitments were firm; organizers said those discussions are ongoing.
The commission did not take a final vote on funding at the work session; staff said the request is in the FY27 budget packet and the matter will be addressed during the budget process.
