Mayor Anthony Wright informed the council that the local YMCA posted that its youth center is "effectively closed" except for counseling and housing services, and that it is still pursuing grant funding without recent success. The mayor said the YMCA historically relied on a King County mental‑illness/drug‑diversion grant and that, based on communications from the YMCA, the space is not currently operating as a youth center.
"The YMCA made a post essentially, saying that the youth center is effectively closed except for counseling services for youth as well as housing services for youth," Mayor Wright said. He said staff will meet with the YMCA branch manager to discuss amending the lease so it complies with the city's requirements and to determine next steps. The mayor told council members that if the YMCA cannot secure funding staff would raise the issue again during the 2027 budget discussions in October, including whether to continue leasing the office space at no charge.
No formal action was taken at the March 9 meeting; staff committed to meeting with the YMCA and reporting back to the council.
