Residents urge rapid‑flashing beacons and speed signage at Stevenson and Cole after recent injuries

A senior resident who identified herself as living in Enumclaw described watching people injured in the street and told council, "We need a set of 4 rectangular solar flashing beacons...the push buttons to indicate, 'hey, I'm here.'" She said the intersection lacks 25 mph signage near the senior center, reported multiple rolling stops and recent serious injuries, and asked when approval and installation could occur.
John Dahlquist, who said he met with Mayor Wright on Feb. 13, told the council he was told there is a budget for safety improvements and provided staff with a color map of the area. "If I had a camera, I would have made an electronic presentation for you...I met with Mayor Wright on February 13. One of my primary questions was, 'Is there a budget for this?' and he said there was," Dahlquist said.
Council committee and public works staff later told the council they have a preliminary engineering concept for pedestrian bulb‑outs and that a short‑term speed zone and parking changes will be implemented; a preliminary engineer's estimate for those measures was described in committee as about $84,000, excluding rapid‑flashing beacons. Residents asked the council to prioritize the beacons and clearer speed signage to protect seniors and others who use the crosswalks.
