Council hears first reading for rezoning to allow funeral home on N. Prairieville St.

City Planner Ronda Cockerham explained the request would change the property from Single-Family Residential-5 to Commercial. Notices were mailed to property owners within 200 feet and one written approval was returned; the Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval. Applicant representative DeDe Willis-Bryant said the church on the property would remain available for community use.
Mayor Aaron Smith opened and closed the public hearing; there were no public comments. On first reading the council had the ordinance caption read aloud. The transcript does not include a final vote adopting the ordinance on second reading or an effective date.
Why it matters: the zoning change would allow a funeral home to operate at the address and could affect traffic, parking and neighborhood character. The Planning & Zoning Commission recommended approval, and the council advanced the item with a first reading.
