The Athens City Council on Nov. 10 voted to table the final reading of an ordinance that would approve a Specific Use Permit for a permanent concrete batch plant at 502 US 175 W.
City Manager Elizabeth Borstad told council staff were awaiting a drainage plan recommended by the Planning & Zoning Commission; she said the plan was approximately 70–75% complete. Property representative Robert Perryman said the drainage plan should be finished by Friday, Nov. 21, and that additional property would be included in the submittal. After discussion, Councilmember Bryan Barker moved to table the final reading, Councilwoman Katha Lawyer seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Why it matters: a permanent concrete batch plant raises land-use and infrastructure concerns—drainage, truck traffic and neighboring property impacts—that planning staff and the applicant are expected to address before the council takes a final vote.
The council took no final action on the Specific Use Permit at the Nov. 10 meeting; staff and the applicant will return with the drainage plan and any revised site materials before the item is reconsidered.
