The Athens City Council on Nov. 10 approved two Sourcewell purchases from Holt Cat – Dallas to replace aging public works equipment.
Public Works Director Shannon Easley told council staff solicited three quotes for each item and recommended the low Sourcewell quotes. Council approved purchase of a 2025 Weiler G65 motor grader for $210,620 to replace a 1984 model and a 2025 Caterpillar 920 wheel loader for $179,770 to replace a 2000 model. Councilmember Bill Priestley moved to approve the motor grader purchase, Councilwoman Katha Lawyer seconded; the motion carried unanimously. Councilmember Bryan Barker moved to approve the wheel loader purchase, Councilmember Priestley seconded; that vote also passed unanimously.
Why it matters: replacing substantially older heavy equipment helps the city maintain roads and public works operations and can reduce downtime and maintenance expense. The purchases are funded through the procurement method Sourcewell and will be finalized by agreement authorized to the city manager.
Council did not discuss a financing package or identify a funding account during the Nov. 10 meeting; staff recommended awarding the contracts to Holt Cat – Dallas as the low Sourcewell vendor.
