Athens council amends purchasing policy to streamline procurement

Councilwoman Katha Lawyer moved to approve the resolution and Councilmember Bryan Barker seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
City staff said the amendment is designed to make routine purchases less administratively burdensome while retaining council oversight over Fund 15. The council did not vote on any specific expenditure as part of this action.
Why it matters: purchasing-policy changes affect how staff obligate city funds and can speed routine purchases for public works, parks and public safety operations. The council’s assurance that Fund 15 items will continue to come to the body preserves an added layer of oversight.
The amendment was approved during the regular session; staff did not present proposed ordinance language beyond the resolution and did not provide an implementation timeline at the meeting.
