Chase County orders engineering for $245,000 east courthouse entrance repair after NIRMA safety notice

John Copland, of Dickinson Land Surveyors, told the Chase County Commissioners on March 24 that water drains toward the courthouse’s east entrance and stairway, accelerating concrete deterioration and creating a safety hazard. Copland said the entire entrance will need to be removed, the site regraded for positive drainage away from the building, a new drainage system installed and a new stair and landing constructed; he estimated very preliminary construction costs at $245,000.
The county said it has been notified by NIRMA that the condition is a safety hazard that must be corrected. Copland will serve as project engineer and oversee a main contractor and construction work, the commission was told.
Commissioner Billie Muehlenkamp moved to direct Copland to proceed with engineering and construction drawing plans to begin the project; Commissioner Jacci Brown seconded the motion and the board approved it unanimously (Muehlenkamp — yes; Brown — yes; Bernhardt — yes). The county did not specify a funding source in the meeting materials or the presentation.
Next steps outlined by the board include preparation of engineering and construction drawings and soliciting contractor bids once plans are complete. The county clerk’s office holds a full copy of the survey and related documents for public inspection.
