Councilmembers used their comment period to extend Lunar New Year greetings, raise accessibility proposals and report community wins.
Councilmember Dang and Councilmember Steven Lee opened by wishing residents a happy Lunar New Year and Councilmember Lee proposed researching whether translators could be provided for all meetings, including real-time AI-assisted headsets. "It might be a very heavy lift... maybe do a feasibility study on whether or not that's something we wanna do," Lee said.
Mayor Sandra Armento reported seeing live AI translation demonstrated at a NALEO event in 2024 and suggested the headset-based approach used by North Las Vegas could be an affordable option for Rosemead. The mayor also praised a recent Veterans Stand Together event attended by Congresswoman Judy Chu and thanked city staff for their work.
Councilmember Lee further announced that, with assistance from the city's federal lobbying contacts and Congresswoman Chu, the city secured about a $500,000 federal grant to renovate and upgrade the Garvey Community Center. The mayor added interest in restoring an older PA system for city events and recreation programs.
These items were provided as council comments; no formal motions were recorded related to translation services, facility upgrades or the PA system during this meeting.
