Public commenter urges Rosemead residents to oppose Monterey Park data center zoning

Miss Kaye, a Rosemead resident speaking during public comment, urged neighbors to attend Monterey Park City Council meetings and oppose proposed data centers at 1977 and 1980 Saturn Street.
Kaye said Monterey Park declined to repeal "zoning ordinance 22-53" that permits data centers and suggested the city may instead put a ballot measure before voters to ban data centers. She told the council a ballot measure could "preclude residents of Rosemead, Saint Gabriel, Montebello, and Alhambra from having any input" on a local solution and asked Rosemead residents to volunteer for outreach if the ballot route proceeds.
Kaye also cited state-level activity, saying "Senator Perez has introduced bill 978," which she described as proposing to ban diesel generators used by data centers, require conformance with state climate goals and prevent owners from passing infrastructure power costs on to residents. She urged residents to attend Monterey Park meetings on Feb. 18 and March 4 and to monitor the item closely.
The council did not take action on the matter; Mayor Sandra Armento thanked Kaye for her remarks and noted the item is before Monterey Park and state lawmakers. The council did not vote on or refer any Rosemead-specific action during this meeting.
Kaye closed her comment with an appeal to local organizers: "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
