Monterey Park — The City Council unanimously approved a permit for an overnight MPK campout in Barnes Park and received details on a planned Tongva-themed playground at Sierra Vista Park.
Christina Alatorre, recreation manager, described the MPK campout as a family-friendly event scheduled for June 12–13 with arts and crafts, a movie (Moana), games, and an assigned check-in and check-out process for registered participants wearing wristbands. Alatorre noted that participants will supply their own tents and that the event will coordinate closely with the fire department for safety and supervised s'mores.
Robert DeGary, director of recreation and community services, described the Sierra Vista playground as a custom Tongva-themed project developed in partnership with the San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians, including native plantings and a mural by a local Tongva artist. The project has the tribe's enthusiasm and a letter of support from the local tribal chief.
Council voted to approve the camping permit and expressed support for the playground designs; staff indicated both projects will return with additional details and implementation timelines.
