Summary
Treasurer Donna Kurtz briefed the board on property‑tax trends, announced tax‑bill mailing and installment dates, and described new payment options including Apple Pay/Google Pay/Venmo/PayPal, PayPal credit, eCheck, and Spanish/English pay‑by‑phone; she urged board members to help publicize workshops and digital features.
Treasurer Donna Kurtz presented a comprehensive update on 2026 property taxes and new payment features to the McHenry County Board on April 21.
Kurtz told the board the first installment is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, with the second installment on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and that tax bills are expected to be delivered during the week of May 4. She described a county resource guide that will accompany bills and encouraged board members to promote upcoming property‑tax workshops hosted by the treasurer’s office, the assessor’s office and the county clerk.
Kurtz outlined new payment options the county is offering: digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo and PayPal), continued free eCheck (funded by the treasurer’s automation fund), PayPal credit or pay‑over‑time options for taxpayers who need them, and Spanish‑ and English‑language pay‑by‑phone services. She said the county will keep convenience fees around 2.4% for now and pursue lower fees when possible. Kurtz said about 10% of taxes are currently paid online and set a goal to double online payers within three years.
Board members asked technical questions about PayPal’s product and the assessment equalization factor; Kurtz deferred equalization detail to assessment staff and pointed members to an assessments presentation on the county website for deeper explanation.
Kurtz closed by encouraging the board to use the county’s new online and outreach tools to help constituents understand their bills and avoid penalties.
