The Marion City Council on Monday approved the appointments of two new patrol officers and administered their oaths of office.
Mayor Absher opened new-business discussion on staffing in the police department and commissioners moved to approve merit-board recommendations and Chief Fitz’s hires. The council approved Chloe Padgett’s appointment as a patrol officer with a start date listed as 05/05/2025; Chief Fitz introduced Padgett to the council and said she "outshined everybody" on testing. Padgett told the council she was "very excited" for the opportunity.
Shortly after, the council approved Brandon Trapp’s appointment as a patrol officer with a start date of 05/06/2025. Chief Fitz introduced Trapp as currently employed by the Southern 7 Health Department as a health inspector and said both recruits must report to the Belleville police academy on May 18.
Both appointments were approved by roll call. Mayor Absher then offered a photo opportunity so family members could leave early; the council paused briefly to pose for photos at the dais.
The council did not attach additional conditions to either hire and recorded the start dates in the motions. No further personnel actions were taken during the meeting. The meeting moved on to other agenda items after sworn-in officers and their families left the chamber.
