Sheriff Braun (appearing remotely) told the board that county parking fines had been historically low (about $37 per violation) and the county’s new parking citation program was not yet covering program administrative costs. He said aligning fines with Mammoth Lakes would help the program pay for itself and better deter unsafe parking during busy periods such as holiday weekends.
Supervisors discussed signage, enforcement authority on state highways (the sheriff indicated the county can issue citations on Highway 158 and coordinate with CHP) and targeted signage priorities for community centers and areas of chronic overnight or holiday overflow parking. Several supervisors supported the change as a public‑safety and equity measure to make county enforcement consistent across municipal boundaries.
The board moved and adopted the resolution; staff said any needed signs would be ordered and installed as priorities allow.
