La Mirada introduces ordinance to adopt 2026 LA County building codes; public hearing set Feb. 24

The La Mirada City Council introduced Ordinance No. 7-48 on Jan. 27 to adopt by reference the 2026 Los Angeles County Building Codes, including updates to the building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, residential and green building standards and existing building codes.
Staff said the updates occur approximately every three years and reflect the most recent California building standards effective Jan. 1, 2026. The council27s prior urgency ordinance (No. 7-46-U) ensured timely interim implementation; this item advances the formal adoption process. Staff noted the city will not adopt chapter 97 of Title 26 (seismic retrofit regulations for certain high-rise buildings) and that the ordinance is exempt from CEQA under Section 15061(b)(3) as a housekeeping code update.
A councilmember asked whether this is routine housekeeping; staff confirmed. The council voted to introduce the ordinance by title only, waive further reading and schedule a public hearing and final reading on Feb. 24, 2026.
