Summary
Rocky Branch Elementary presented its schoolwide morning meetings and a paired-grade 'Rocket Buddies' program that pairs older and younger students for community-building activities; students and staff described activities and a service drive that produced nearly 200 bags for the Oconee County Senior Center.
Rocky Branch Elementary staff told the board April 20 that the school has expanded morning meetings to a schoolwide practice and introduced a paired-grade 'Rocket Buddies' initiative to strengthen school spirit, character education and family engagement.
Presenters said morning meetings (a 15-minute routine) emphasize school spirit, kindness and contribution, and the Rocket Buddies program pairs grade-level groups so older students mentor younger ones. Activities this year included friendship puzzles, key-chain crafting and paired reading; presenters said the pairs have continued to connect outside structured activities.
When the school focused on contribution, staff and students organized a collection drive to benefit the Oconee County Senior Center; presenters said the project exceeded its goal and resulted in nearly 200 bags prepared for delivery.
Students spoke briefly about their favorite Rocket Buddies activities during a "Mini Mic Monday" segment: one student said, "Something fun I've done with my Rocket Buddies is making a key keychain for my backpack," while another said the best part is "watching kindergartners interact with third graders." A parent in the audience praised the cross-grade relationships and said the program helped her child build vocabulary and community connections.
Presenters invited the board for photographs and a student selection at the close of the presentation.
