Board approves American Legion Post 29 addition to improve accessibility

The Caroline County Board of License Commissioners on Jan. 28 approved construction of a first-floor addition at American Legion Caroline Post 29 to make the building more accessible for veterans and volunteers.
Harvey Howard, who said he goes by Jim, represented the American Legion and told the board the upstairs office space is cramped and on stairs; the proposed addition, roughly 15 by 35 feet (plans indicate about 16 by 30), would move office functions to the first floor, provide controlled access and make emergency evacuation safer for people with disabilities.
Staff confirmed the submitted plans and stated there is no intent to serve or store alcoholic beverages in the new addition. Commissioners who spoke expressed support for the project.
Commissioner (speaker 5) moved to approve the addition; Commissioner (speaker 3) seconded the motion, and the board approved it by voice vote.
The board did not place size limits on the addition beyond the presented plans and encouraged the applicant to proceed with contractor work and required local permitting steps.
The board's approval is a licensing-level endorsement of the proposed licensed-premise modification; building permits and inspections remain subject to other local codes and processes.
