Lansing City Council on Monday adopted a second-quarter budget amendment for fiscal year 2025–26 that includes Department of Justice funds to hire six additional police officers, and anticipates additional state road funding in future years.
Vice President Palamanoglou summarized the amendment and said the DOJ funds will support hiring six officers for at least four years and that the city plans to gradually absorb the positions into the general fund over time. "Mr. Brower stated that the city does intend to leverage the public safety revenue sharing and increase contributions from the general fund over time to extend and incorporate full funding into the general fund operations," the vice president said.
The amendment also noted an expected increase in annual local road funding of roughly $6 million tied to changes in state revenue sharing and gas-tax allocations, added a $100,000 disaster contingency appropriation, and moved opioid-related funds to support Lansing Fire Department, Lansing Police Department and gun-violence intervention programs.
Council approved the budget amendment by voice vote; members thanked state legislators and staff who worked on the numbers and noted the mayor will present a fuller budget proposal in the coming weeks.
