Murray County commissioners table proposal to replace administrator with coordinator after heated debate

Summary
A proposal from the personnel committee to replace the county administrator model with a coordinator model prompted disagreement among commissioners over process and transparency. Commissioners voted to table items 485–488 and discuss them at a May 5 work session.
The Murray County Board postponed a decision on restructuring its central management after a protracted debate about process, transparency and the scope of the proposed coordinator role.
Personnel-committee members presented a proposal to transition from a state-defined "administrator" model to a more flexible "coordinator" model, arguing it would allow the board to shape duties without the statutory constraints linked to an administrator role. One commissioner described the change as a way to avoid fixed statutory severance and to allow the county to tailor a position to its needs.
Several commissioners objected to the timeline and the manner of notification. One commissioner said, "I just think this is wrong," and pressed for a work session so the full board could review the job description, salary and reporting lines. Another commissioner said the item had been discussed with personnel and outside advisers but acknowledged colleagues' concerns about being given only a few days to review the materials.
After extended discussion, a motion to table agenda items 485–488 and to continue the conversation at a work session on May 5 passed by voice vote. The personnel-committee members who brought the proposal said they would use the extra time to incorporate feedback and to provide additional supporting information, including the job description, salary recommendation and legal review notes.
The board did not adopt any personnel changes at this meeting; the matter is scheduled for further review at a work session.
