Fayette County approves $4.23 million generator contract for Crosstown Water Treatment Plant

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 11 approved awarding Contract No. 2535-P to Georgia Power for the purchase and installation of two natural gas generators and a transfer switch at the Crosstown Water Treatment Plant, in a not-to-exceed amount of $4,228,090.00.
Water Systems Director Vanessa Tigert told the Board the plant has outgrown its existing standby power: "the current generator, installed in the late 1980's, could not keep up and needed to be updated to power the plant in the event of a significant electrical outage," she said. Tigert said the majority of the project will be paid via a FEMA/GEMA grant.
Commissioners approved the recommendation on a motion by Vice Chairman Edward Gibbons, seconded by Commissioner Charles W. Oddo; the vote was 5-0. Commissioner Oddo asked about the purpose of the upgrade; Tigert said the older generator cannot meet the plant's increased load and that the new equipment will ensure the plant can continue operating during extended outages.
The approval replaces a prior discussion that had tabled the item on Aug. 28. The county did not provide a specific schedule for installation during the meeting record; procurement will proceed as authorized. The Board did not record any amendments to the contract at the time of the vote.
