Galena Street extension raises development opportunities and traffic questions in Granite Falls
Summary
City staff and commissioners said a proposed Galena Street extension could create mixed‑use opportunities and shift traffic patterns; staff and council members raised questions about right‑of‑way, frontage improvements and whether the route could still be closed for community events.
Community Development Director Eric Jensen told the joint March 8 meeting that a proposed West Galena Street extension could become a second commercial corridor and create opportunities for mixed‑use development, such as retail at ground level with housing above.
City Manager Brent Kirk described potential redevelopment scenarios—including a developer consolidating lots for mixed‑use projects, rezoning adjacent parcels for mixed use and relocating the park‑and‑ride behind the McDonald's to free up property for other uses. Jensen added that the extension would require frontage improvements, and staff are coordinating with property owners such as McDaniel’s Hardware on turn‑lane and right‑of‑way matters.
Commissioner Straughn said he expected less cut‑through traffic on Stanley if Galena opens: "I live on Anderson in the CBD zone and am excited about Galena extension because people cut in front of my house to get to Stanley. Would be a lot less traffic on Stanley." Mayor Matthew Hartman referenced a traffic study projection that up to 40% of Stanley traffic could shift to Galena.
Commissioner Morrison asked whether Galena could still be closed for annual events such as Railroad Days and Show N Shine; staff said traffic engineering and future design will consider event closures and street function. The meeting also included an "issue list" of longer‑term infrastructure items—bridge repairs, parking alignment, truck route enforcement and street‑width code adjustments—that staff will examine in subsequent meetings.
No motions or votes were taken at the meeting on Galena Street; staff said they will return with more detailed traffic and design analysis as the project advances.
