Staff say state law permits holding landlords responsible; county may consider ordinance amendment

Bruce Ivey, Public Utilities & Transportation Division Director, told the committee he had spoken with County Attorney Virginia Harman, who advised that state law permits the county to hold a landlord responsible in certain circumstances.
Ivey said that, on that basis, it would be possible to revise the county ordinance to assign landlord responsibility, but that further discussions with the commission would be necessary before staff draft any amendment. The committee heard this as a preliminary procedural report; no ordinance language or timetable was presented at the Feb. 18 meeting.
Any change to the county code would require legal review, public notice and formal action by the Board of Commissioners.
