Public Works director asks committee to recommend outsourced geotechnical core drilling for new facility

Allison Watters, committee chair of the Board of Commissioners, opened the Feb. 18 Public Utilities and Transportation Committee meeting where Public Works Director Michael Skeen asked the committee to recommend outsourcing a geotechnical core-drilling program for the proposed Public Works facility.
Skeen told the committee the drilling would give staff a clearer measure of how much rock exists at the site and would directly inform foundation design and construction methods. He said county crews did not have the specialized capability for the depth of investigation needed and that an outside contractor would be required.
The request was presented as a recommendation for the committee to forward; no formal motion or vote was recorded at the meeting. Committee members did not debate a dollar amount for the investigation during the session.
The county’s next procedural step, as described in the meeting, is to prepare a recommendation to send to the full Board of Commissioners for approval of contracting and funding terms.
