Josephine County extends cable franchise with Spectrum Pacific West, drops PEG requirements

The Josephine County Board of Commissioners on April 8 approved an extension of the franchise agreement with Spectrum Pacific West, LLC (formerly Falcon Cable Systems Company).
Legal Counsel Wally Hicks told the Board that revisions were made to the agreement following prior Board discussion. Notably, provisions related to public, education and government (PEG) channel requirements were removed and language addressing fees was adjusted. Hicks also noted the agreement is governed in part by federal law, which caps franchise fees at five percent of annual gross revenue.
Commissioner Gary Richardson moved approval; Commissioner Colene Martin seconded. On a roll call vote, Richardson, Martin and Chair Ron Smith voted yes and the motion passed 3-0.
What happens next: County counsel and staff will complete the extension paperwork and file it as required by federal franchise rules and county administrative procedures.
