The Detroit Lakes Planning Commission approved March 27 a new conditional-use permit for a self-storage facility at 1397 Wenner Road near Menards after staff presented an amended site plan.
Pat Wewell, who identified himself as a real-estate representative for Menard Inc., said the project is functionally the same as a 2023 approval but the layout and unit counts changed during design. "Functionally, everything else remains the same," Wewell said, explaining the revisions led to 392 enclosed storage units and four outdoor storage areas instead of the previously approved configuration.
Staff recommended approval and said most conditions from the earlier permit remain. Because the earlier approval had aged and a building permit may take additional time, staff recommended issuing a new conditional-use permit rather than an amendment. Commissioners approved the permit by voice vote.
Next steps: the developer will proceed under the new permit and follow staff conditions, including required site and operational standards discussed earlier in the record.
