Uniontown — Mayor Anthony Wright informed council on March 9 that the local YMCA posted that its youth center is effectively closed, and he asked staff to meet with the YMCA branch manager to discuss amending the city lease so it reflects current operations.
"We have a lease that says that thou shall operate a youth center," Wright said, explaining that the YMCA is operating only counseling and housing services while pursuing grant funding, and that the Auburn branch had not received expected funding. The YMCA historically relied on King County grant funding for youth services, Wright said.
Staff will meet with the local YMCA manager to explore an amended lease that aligns with the organization’s current service levels and funding outlook. Wright said the council may need to revisit a decision during 2027 budget discussions to determine whether to continue allowing the leased office space to be provided under current terms if YMCA services do not resume.
No formal motion or vote was taken at the March 9 meeting; the matter was placed on the council’s follow-up list for future action if necessary.
