Summary
City staff announced a planned sidewalk project on West 1st Street from South Columbia Avenue to Highway 260, including a crosswalk near South 5th Street and sidewalk work by Stryker Park; bids will be solicited and construction is tentatively planned for late spring to early summer.
City staff notified council and neighbors of an upcoming sidewalk project on West 1st Street stretching from South Columbia Avenue to Highway 260, with sidewalks along the north side of West 1st, a crosswalk near South 5th Street and work along the front of Stryker Park.
Tyson said bids will be solicited soon and that construction is tentatively expected in May–June, though staff declined to give a firm start date. "We wanted the public to be aware that this project is happening," Tyson said, and described neighborhood outreach plans including door hangers, targeted notices and social media updates.
Staff warned that some on-street parking along the construction corridor may be restricted during work and said they will replace some wood posts with metal posts for stop signs, adjust catch basins to grade, and consider driveway adjustments where existing approaches create conflicts. Residents asked specific questions about crosswalk placement and parking; staff said the crosswalk will be placed just west of the small road by the park and that the new sidewalk will tie into existing sidewalks at the visitor center.
No council vote was required for the announcement; staff will return with bid documents and a construction schedule once the project goes to bid.
