Council trials serpentine draft-pick for 2026 committee and liaison assignments

At the Jan. 27 meeting the council addressed Item 2.2, the annual review of committee assignments and appointments for 2026. Staff summarized the process (Resolution 2020-554) and provided a worksheet; council then tested a new serpentine 'draft-pick' method intended to spread committee service evenly across members.
The exchange was procedural and at times technical: members discussed seniority order, three‑year service limits on some committees, alternates, how to handle absent members and whether practical workload considerations should guide picks. Councilmembers named the committees they preferred (examples included Ross Valley Fire, Reimagine Creek Park, GPAC, MIRA, TAM and Climate Action) and asked staff to prepare a formal, written list of selections for the absent member(s) to confirm at a subsequent meeting.
Staff (Serge) said he would return with a draft staff report reflecting the evening’s choices, and the council agreed that absent members should be given an opportunity to accept or decline assignments before finalization.
Next step: staff will prepare a formal roster based on tonight’s choices, circulate it to the full council, and return the item for confirmation at a future meeting; the council flagged several committees of particular importance to balance member workloads and local representation.
