Police and Fire Commission ratifies BC Justin Schulpius’s appointment, discusses hiring process

The Police and Fire Commission met Oct. 21, 2025, at the Public Safety Building in New Berlin and approved a permanent appointment for BC Justin Schulpius after a closed-session review of personnel matters.
Commissioner Buer moved to ratify Fire Chief Mark Polzin’s recommendation to end the probationary period for BC Justin Schulpius and make his appointment permanent, and Commissioner Palechek seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The commission had entered closed session earlier under Wis. Stat. § 19.85(1)(c) to consider employment and performance-evaluation data for public employees. After reconvening to open session, commissioners discussed updates to the Fire Department’s hiring process for firefighter/EMS personnel as reviewed in closed session but did not take formal action during the meeting.
At the start of the meeting, Commissioners completed a roll call establishing a quorum and approved the Sept. 10, 2025 meeting minutes; that approval passed with four affirmative votes and one abstention. Commissioner Piontek welcomed Commissioner Buer to her first Police & Fire Commission meeting and noted available training from the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, which the commission said is under revision and expected to be available in early 2026. Commissioner O’Donnell provided the current Rules & Regulations and a commissioner contact list.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn that passed unanimously at 1:41 PM.
