Landmarks Commission keeps "Center" spelling for New Berlin Center Cemetery in 5-1 vote, orders sign corrections

The New Berlin Landmarks Commission voted 5-1 on Oct. 16 to keep the spelling "Center" on signage for New Berlin Center Cemetery and instructed the Streets Department to correct four sign proofs.
Vice-Chairperson Ament moved to keep the spelling "Center," Commissioner Erdmann seconded the motion, and it passed with five commissioners in favor and one opposed. Commissioner Warczak had earlier moved to adopt the alternative spelling "Centre," but that motion received no second and did not proceed.
Vice-Chairperson Ament will return the four sign proofs to the Streets Department for spelling corrections, to add the Landmarks logo to the bottom of the signs, to note Landmark status on the Holy Apostles Cemetery sign and to add the year "2025" to all four signs. The commission's action follows a review prompted by inconsistent spellings found in documents and local tradition.
Commissioner Warczak also reported on site-condition items related to New Berlin Center Cemetery: there is no confirmed location of a potter's field at the site, the Police Department could provide a drone view of the cemetery to assist documentation, and no reports of vandalism were found in police records for the historic cemeteries.
The commission said it will follow up on the sign corrections and related documentation updates at its next meeting on Nov. 20, 2025.
