The police chief told the council that Lieutenant Ron Ijcek plans to retire in July after more than 35 years of service, which will create a vacancy at the lieutenant level and, eventually, at least one police officer opening.
"Lieutenant Ron Ijcek from our department is retiring after over 35 years of service. He's planning on retiring the July," the chief said, and asked council permission to begin advertising to fill the expected vacancies.
The chief explained that recruitment timing depends on who fills the lieutenant role: if the promotion comes from within patrol, that will create a patrol vacancy; if promotion is from an investigator position, the opening would be different. The department has not been advertising for six months because it had been projected to reach full strength; staff proposed restarting advertising immediately so recruitment can proceed in time for anticipated retirements.
Council did not record a formal vote on the hiring request during the meeting. The chief said the department will return with further details as the promotion process and candidate pool develop.
