McMinn County mayor reports landfill corrective action plan, recycling partnership talks and local project updates

County Mayor John M. Gentry told commissioners the county will submit a corrective action plan in April for a Class 1 landfill overfill, is working on engineering for a Class 3–4 expansion, is coordinating a tire amnesty with the City of Athens, and provided status updates on health department construction, Mount Verd clearing, T‑hangar concrete work and a North Etowah project.
County Mayor John M. Gentry gave several operational updates during the March 19 commission meeting.
On landfill oversight, Gentry said the county continues to work on a corrective action plan for a Class 1 overfill and expects to submit that plan in April. A seismic stability test has been completed and returned; engineering work is underway to size buttresses and to determine how additional fill will be placed for a planned Class 3–4 expansion. Gentry said the expansion permitting is ongoing.
Gentry said the county has not authorized a large-scale cleanup/fix-up week recently because the county lacks Class 3–4 capacity until the expansion is complete. He also said officials will meet with the City of Athens to discuss a possible Tire Amnesty program for residents only, in coordination with Liberty Tire and the Athens recycling center; the county and city are working to finalize dates and funding.
Other project updates included pouring concrete for a T‑hangar project, Health Department construction ahead of schedule, Mount Verd clearing about 40–50% complete (Gentry estimated about 20 acres when asked by Commissioner J. W. McPhail), and a North Etowah project that came in under bid. Gentry also mentioned planned meetings on county forestry and recreation options and a recreation meeting on March 30.
These remarks were informational; the commission did not take separate action on these operational items at the March 19 meeting.
