Board discusses school‑meal quality and bus service after late‑bus incidents

At the April meeting, Southern Columbia Area SD board members questioned district leaders about the quality and consistency of school meals and raised concerns about repeated late buses that disrupted students' schedules.

Committee members asked whether whole milk is now being offered and sought comparative data and cost options to improve meal quality without large budget increases. "I would like to really drive into how can we make lunch substantially better than what we are offering now," one committee member said, asking staff to identify the drivers of current meal choices and whether modest changes could improve quality.

A staff speaker (Clerk/Staff member) responded with immediate operational details: meal counts have increased, staffing shortfalls temporarily affected service in the elementary school, and some short‑term changes already are being made. The staff speaker said the district will provide a form and follow‑up materials so board members can submit specific questions for the food services director to address at a future meeting.

During public recognition, a community member raised concerns that a bus arrived an hour late due to a driver calling off; administrators confirmed the incident, said they had a conversation with the contractor that day and requested more substitute drivers for the busy testing and field‑trip period.

Board members asked staff to return with meal count data, service models and cost comparisons at the May meeting and to continue working with transportation vendors to reduce late runs. No policy changes were adopted at the meeting; the board scheduled follow‑up reporting.
