Forsyth County Schools refines learner profile after advisory councils' feedback

Summary
District leaders described five updated learner‑profile tenants — responsibility, interaction, resilience, creativity and contribution — and said advisory input (parent, teacher and student councils) shaped the revisions that will guide strategic planning.
Forsyth County Schools leaders told the board on April 21 that advisory councils of parents, teachers and students played a central role in revising the district’s learner profile, and outlined five priority areas the district plans to embed across grade levels.
Michelle Dugan, the district's chief of communications, said the advisory councils are designed to inform, engage and develop leaders and that the groups produced actionable recommendations this year on topics ranging from eSPLOST and school finance to safety and common assessments. She introduced advisory leads and said the councils meet three times a year to provide feedback to district leaders.
Dr. Valerie Lowe summarized the five tenant categories the district has drafted for the learner profile: showing personal responsibility (self‑motivation, civic responsibility), interacting effectively (communication and technical writing), demonstrating intentionality and resilience (grit and ownership), thinking creatively and critically, and contributing and serving (community engagement and leadership). Lowe said the profile will be adjusted by grade level so K‑5, middle and high schools can interpret the tenants appropriately.
Teacher advisory members and the teacher‑of‑the‑year representative described how their feedback was solicited and used. Charlotte Wang, introduced as Lambert High School's teacher of the year, said teachers of the year collected site‑level feedback and that the learner‑profile updates reflected that input. Student advisory participants said the councils gave students an opportunity to be “a voice in the room,” with one video message from Sofia Joyce describing leadership development and listening skills gained through the advisory.
District leaders said the refined learner profile will help shape the strategic‑planning process and curriculum alignment in the coming year. The board asked clarifying questions about how the tenants translate by grade level and thanked advisory participants for contributing.
