Fayette County approved staff’s request Oct. 23 to submit a competitive funding proposal to the Georgia Department of Transportation for up to $16 million to design, acquire right-of-way for, and construct two intersection improvement roundabouts along McDonough Road.
Public Works Director Phil Mallon told the Board the proposal seeks 80% grant funding (up to $12.8 million) with a 20% local match (up to $3.2 million). Mallon said the project includes two roundabouts — one at McDonough Road/McElroy Road/County Line Road and a second that would serve as the primary ingress/egress near the Building & Grounds driveway — and will include pedestrian crosswalks and room for future widening. He said preliminary engineering (PE) match needs could be modest (an example PE match of roughly $757,565 was noted) and staff could use existing SPLOST funds for early phases, but full ROW and construction matches would require additional budget authorization if the full grant were awarded.
County Administrator Steve Rapson said staff would set aside local match funds from available SPLOST sources if the grant is awarded. Mallon noted a likely phased award approach and explained federal-aid grants are typically reimbursed as phases are completed.
The Board approved authorizing staff to submit the GDOT proposal (motion by Vice Chairman Edward Gibbons; second by Commissioner Charles W. Oddo). Vote: 5-0.
