Pasadena ISD honors parents, students and officers who subdued suspect at drumline event; MTI presents $223,938 to district foundation

The Pasadena Independent School District board publicly honored parents, students and law enforcement Feb. 25 for their response to a Feb. 1 incident at an indoor drumline competition at Pasadena Memorial High School that left one person struck and then taken into custody.
Superintendent Dr. Powell thanked those who intervened and said the rapid response changed the outcome. He asked the honorees to come forward as the board recognized parents and staff who helped physically restrain a suspect, Pasadena Memorial students who administered first aid and several law-enforcement agencies that responded. The district read names of honorees the board asked to be recognized, including Juan Lopez and Corey Veasey and four fathers from Pearland ISD: Abram Trevino, Joe Sanchez, Polo Castillo and Adam Cuero. The district also recognized students Makayla Talavera, Charles Mitchell and Jorge Garza for assisting the injured consultant until first responders arrived.
Mayor Jeff Wagner addressed the group and presented a proclamation, saying, “As mayor of this great city, today, each one of y’all, we’re gonna name it y’all’s day here in Pasadena.” The board arranged a VIP reception for honorees and family members to follow the meeting.
The recognition segment also included awards and fundraising news tied to the McDonald’s Texas Invitational (MTI). Dr. Kirk Lewis and MTI representatives described the tournament’s long-running community role and presented a check to the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation for $223,938. MTI representatives said the tournament has presented a total of $3.7 million to the Pasadena and Deer Park education foundations since the event’s inception and that Deer Park ISD will receive more than $50,000 this year. Dr. Lewis and other presenters credited volunteers, culinary arts programs and local sponsors for the event’s success.
The recognitions and MTI presentation were ceremonial; no board action was required.
