Board shifts weed‑and‑feed priority to irrigated parks and asks staff for maps and costs

At its Aug. 26 meeting the Brainerd Park Board gave staff direction to focus the city’s $25,000 weed‑and‑feed allocation on irrigated parks rather than the College Drive boulevard, and asked staff to return with maps, square footage and contractor quotes to firm up costs.
Staff said current coverage includes ball fields, JC Soccer Field, Lumb Park and College Drive but noted College Drive is a difficult, non‑irrigated corridor where fertilizer and spray will not produce durable results. One board member said Gregory Park and irrigated areas provide better return on the city’s investment. "Gregory Park is a much better use of those funds than College Drive," a committee member said, citing shade and irrigation in Gregory that support turf recovery.
Board members also urged staff to develop a 52‑week mowing/maintenance schedule and an annual priority calendar that distinguishes board‑level decisions from staff tasks. Members asked staff to find the original spatial maps used to scope the program and to solicit updated quotes if the list of covered areas changes.
What’s next: Staff will locate the original maps, calculate cost per area and return with options (reallocate coverage, increase budget, or reduce scope) so the board can finalize the program before the next budget cycle.
